If you’re a beginner at SEO Internet marketing or seeking new ways to build traffic to your website, there are a few SEO techniques you’ll want to avoid. Some mistakes will cost you some visitors to your site; others might get your site banned from the search engines or the Internet forever. Here are five SEO mistakes you should avoid.

1. Bait and Switch

You’ve probably heard of the old “bait and switch” routine used in the auto sales business. Well there’s a similar method being used online to drive traffic to websites. Some site owners think they can lure visitors in with keywords that are totally unrelated to their website, and then convert the visitors over to buyers or ad clickers once they arrive. Avoid this method like the plague. It will eventually cause the search engines to kick your site off for good, and visitors will dislike your site as well once they realize it’s not what they’re seeking. Use only those keywords and phrases that are relevant to your website’s theme for the best long-term results.

2. Keyword Spamming

Don’t spam with keywords in any shape or form. Never send spam e-mails to people who didn’t ask for them, even with relevant keywords. Avoid stuffing too many keywords into your Web pages. Don’t submit your site using mega-software and all sorts of bogus keywords in hopes of getting millions of visitors over night. It just doesn’t happen that way…and you’ll ruin your one-time chance to build a reputable online business. Instead, be consistent in online promotions and build keywords and SEO-friendly content into your site gradually.

3. Too Few Keywords

On the flip side, some website owners fail to use enough keywords or key phrases throughout their Web pages. Some do this to avoid spamming the search engines while others are simply ignorant of the importance of SEO. In either case, keywords and phrases should be sprinkled throughout all content on every page. A main keyword can be used three to five times on a page while secondary phrases might be used two or three times. Keywords should be included in image ALT text for your logo and other graphics, in the text links and even in the footer information if possible.

4. A Design No-No with Flash

Avoid designing your site completely in Flash. Flash looks great and can serve a wonderful purpose in making your site look “flashy!” But unfortunately, Flash blocks search engines from seeing your keywords and site theme. Flash sites can get listed in the search engines, but it’s less likely that they’ll be a big SEO success due to the design obstacles. If you want to use Flash, then only design certain pages with it for special presentations. If your entire site is in Flash, be sure to offer an HTML alternative for SEO purposes.

5. Ignoring Headings

Heading tags on a page are noticed by the search engines and are often used to determine the overall theme of a Web page. Make sure your page headings include your main target keyword or phrase. Also, avoid using an image to emphasize your headings. Headings should be labeled in an HTML heading tag only – not hidden in an image code.

Avoiding these five mistakes can help you take your SEO efforts to a new level without risk of getting your site banned or demoted in the search engines. Focus on effective Internet marketing methods that some of the most well-known marketers use, and remember that success takes time and patience!

As everybody know about fight going between Adobe and Apple. Few days back, Steve Jobs posted a long letter about Flash mentioning why he did not allow Flash on iPodTouch, iPhone and iPad. Steve Jobs claimed in his letter:

“Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards.”

Whatever the reasons are, I believe that it is not the end of Flash. I understand that HTML5 is the future of the web but we can not kick out Flash just like that. In support of Flash, I am starting this monthly series where I will showcase Creative Flash Websites from past month.
