Marketing on YouTube takes more than spending large amounts of money. While many brands launch YouTube campaigns, only a select few have what it takes to gain fans and move up YouTube’s ranks. Here are the top ten:

1. Project for Awesome

Touting good causes, this brand has made it onto YouTube’s homepage. It compiles videos created by the YouTube community and promotes different charities and causes worldwide. Overall, the organization has become one of the most popular brands on YouTube.

2. Old Spice

With its “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” campaign, Old Spice proved it wasn’t just a product for older males. Generating over 100 million views in one week’s time, the ad propelled the brand into YouTube history in 2010.

3. Summit Entertainment

By posting its trailer for the movie Eclipse, Summit joined the ranks of 2010′s best YouTube videos. It also fueled the Team Edward/Team Jacob rivalry and promoted books by Stephenie Meyer. With the brand’s success, it’s a sure bet Twi-hards saved a copy using a YouTube Downloader.

4. Jimmy Kimmel Live

When Jimmy Kimmel surprised a three-year-old Justin Bieber fan with a visit from the pop icon, the video went viral. The clip, which is just under five minutes, gained over 19 million hits. The original video of the young fan that gained Kimmel’s attention hit over 17 million views.

5. NikeGolf

By posting YouTube ads of Tiger Woods before his return to golf, the company overcame the negative situation and salvaged its marketing relationship with the soiled star. It also generated a number of fan-made parodies.

6. T-Mobile

With its acapella versions of arrival videos and other YouTube campaigns, T-Mobile brought smiles to fans, entertained viewers, and sold phones. It also proved “life is for sharing.”

7. Coke

When Coke rigged one of its vending machines to hand out surprises, it created a YouTube marketing campaign that went viral – and brought many smiles to the recipients of free items. Merging Mentos and Coke Zero to power a rocket car, the brand created another viral sensation.

8. Heineken

With its “Real Men of Talent” campaign, Heineken promoted its brand across a multi-national platform. Pairing reality spoofs with beer bottles, the campaign appealed to a wide target audience.

9. Ford Models

Having beautiful women to use as a resource certainly helps the modeling agency, but that’s not the only thing Ford Models is doing right. With its multi-lingual ads and practical information, the company has held on to one of the top ten spots for YouTube marketing success.

10. Home Depot

Home Depot uses YouTube to show users how to fix things around the home. With its laid-back marketing approach, it encourages people to become do-it-yourself fans, driving traffic into their stores.

5 Music Album Covers Featuring Retro Typography

Typography is more popular now than ever before; it’s stylish, creative and isn’t limited to using words to express an idea – the shapes of the letters themselves can signal part of the message. The use of retro or classic fonts is a growing and very popular art form – especially in the creation of music covers.

Classic fonts are infinitely entertaining to use in design work because many of them seem to have acquired their own personality over time. People have come to associate certain fonts with certain things. One font might remind you of Elvis while another might take you back to watching cartoons as a child. The truth is classic fonts are popular because they’re connected to emotion.

Here are 10 outstanding examples of classic album covers done in retro style.

1. Lew Davies & His Orchestra’s “Strange Interlude”

Going way back, Lew Davies & His Orchestra’s album “Strange Interlude” demonstrates a bold design. On a white background, the tall bold font gives more of an impression than the words do. It has a commanding style and uses warm colors.

2. Eugene Ormandy’s “Magnificent Marches”

The Philadelphia Orchestra Eugene Ormandy’s “Magnificent Marches” is mesmerizing. The bright pink word stream leads your eyes off into the endless horizon. It’s simple, eye catching and effective.

3. The Blood, Sweat & Tears – “Greatest Hits”

The Blood, Sweat & Tears cover for their “Greatest Hits” album is modern looking but very unique. Its rich wooden typography makes the letters look stacked.

4. XTC’s “Go 2″

XTC’s album “Go 2” makes snarky use of typography. The entire cover is an essay about how album covers are meant to draw you in and trick you into buying the album. Imitating this design would be easy, but it would be hard to get an essay as cleaver as that.

Want a new camera gadget that doesn’t cost hundreds or even thousands? Try a mirror or a puddle. Photographing reflective surfaces is a great way to show off skill and ingenuity. If you’d like your photography to play with point of view, explore multiple views of a subject, and use landscape reflection to show space and scale, then look to these great Flickr groups for inspiration.

1. Riflesso/Reflections

Buildings, sunsets, self-portraits: This group is full of reflective photography’s great standbys. Yet Riflesso imbues them with an undeniable graphic panache. Start here to see reflective photography with the bar raised high.

2. Photoreflections

Perhaps because of the contest aspect (post one, award three), this group showcases well-considered, skillful shots. Come here to see unusual interpretations of reflections: shadows, windows, metal, Photoshopped images.

3. Reflections

This is a great place to get a quick fix of inspiration. The photos here are more playful and witty than the baseline for reflective photography.

4. Reflections Spiegelungen

In contrast to the lighthearted “Reflections” group, Reflections Spiegelungen has an edgy, cosmopolitan feel. Come here to see urban scenes with a hint of futurism, and comparatively few mountain over a river scenes (though the few included nature scapes are stellar).

5. Reflections/Distortions

The specialization of this group inspires photographs both great and mundane. For every shot of a Christmas ball there is a weird and irreproducible juxtaposition of light on the street; for every blurred waterfront landscape, there is a surreal experimental shot that highlights color and composition over content.

6. Fragmented Reflections

Despite the preponderance of cool-toned mirrored building shots, this group is far from monotonous. The focus of these photos is the often-unintended patterns formed by a series of reflections. Come here to forget architecture and just focus on the interplay of lines, repetitions, flaws, and movement.

7. Sideways Nature Reflections on Water

Want to analyze the composition and movement of a design? Turn it on its side. Sideways art escapes context, leaving form, movement, and color. This group’s photos are a field trip through nature photography – some are magnificent displays of organic motifs, and some just plod. (And some look like faces. Thanks, pareidolia.)

8. Abstract Reflections

Since this group focuses on abstract photos, the design strikes first; after a delightful pause, the content of the picture is a delayed bonus prize. This group raises the bar high for skill. Not a muddy mountain scene in the lot.

9. Windows of Reflection

And now for something different: This group is for light reflected off of other surfaces, rather than the reflector itself. Come here to see images projected, providing only hints of the form of the reflector. Stay for the ghostly, storied timbre of this pool’s oeuvre.

10. Reflections of…

This supergroup has more than 3,000 members, and yet manages to consistently surprise. It seems to cull the reflective gems from contributors who don’t specialize in reflective photography. As a result, many of these photos bring something fresh to the format. Come here to find a masterpiece, and stay to post your own.

The color blue is often related to sky, water and referred to as a natural universal color. It can be used to have a design look both conservative and modern in combination with the right elements and typography.

ShareCG is one of them, with thousands of resources in categories like tutorials, 3d models, materials, textures, animations, software, plugins, photography, poser stuff among others. All these resources for absolutely free and uploaded by their authors.

You must register to be able to download, but it’s worth the extra time registering if you can put your hands on so many wonderful resources.

124 Frozen Photos of Ice

The folks at Gizmodo published 124 photographies for a new challenge: Frozen Ice. There are, without any doubt, some fantastic photos form landscape to spectacular and intriguing macro shots. The goog news for amateur photographers is that each photo has technical details like camera used, aperture, lens used, filters, etc. so you can have an idea of what was needed for that pretty ice shot.

The photo we used here in the article is from Nichi Tonsberg and this is the description: Here in Denmark we are having a really cold winter and the fjord which i live close to have been frozen, but warmer weather and alot of wind created these 2-3m high ice structures. I think the sun got some nice contrasts in the scene. Shot with an Olympus E-620 standard kit-lens 14-42mm , did a bit of contrast enhancement in photoshop. Iso 100, F3.5, 1/800.

About Justin

Justin Maller is a freelance illustrator and art director based in Melbourne, Australia. He has been creating digital art for over eight years, and has produced professionally in both a private and studio based capacity for the last three. He is represented by Jeremy Wortsman of the Jacky Winter Group.

Justin has had the pleasure of producing illustrations and concept art for a diverse array of companies and publications worldwide, and enjoys a cordial collaborative relationship with several prestigious international design studios. Work aside, he is an inner core member of the Keystone Design Union, an avid sneaker collector, occassional tweeter, and a mild force of nature on the basketball court. Justin is also the Creative Director of The Depthcore Collective, an international modern art collective established in June 2002. In the final post on Jolby, SmashingShare looks at awesome artwork by talented Josh and Colby from Jolby.

After meeting in design school at the Art Institutes, Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols began their design careers in their hometown of San Diego. As their lives and careers progressed they found themselves in two very separate cities: Josh in Chicago and Colby in Portland. Though it would seem the distance would end their creative alliance, the two found new ways to co-produce, proving they may possibly share the same brain. Jolby combines their talents through Colby’s artistic obsession with creatures and shapes and Josh’s creative love for pattern and texture. In 2009, Josh moved to Portland, OR bringing the two artists together to collaborate in the same city for the first time.

5 Reasons Why Talented Designers Must Fail in Order to Succeed

Fellow passionate designers all over the world,
You have a gift. Use it! You are a special bread of people because you never go with the flow. With every design you create, you are making your own mark and showing the world your individuality and uniqueness as a designer.

Now let me ask you a thought-provoking question: Do you think that renowned designers made it this far over night? I doubt it! We only see their great work but in order to reach greatness, they probably invested so many hours in order to “perfectionize” their craft. Similar to you, me, and all designers, these famous ones probably have some hidden work that they wouldn’t dare to share with anyone. You know why? Because it sucks!
Judging creative work is always controversial and very subjective as different people tend have radically different tastes. So, expecting that everyone will love your work is the most self-defeating lie of all!

The ones who actually made it big time in the fiercely competitive design world were the ones who had unshakeable belief that they will. It always starts with believing in yourself so if you show some of your work to some idiot and he made a mockery out of you, your self-confidence will be your savior and who knows, you might be today’s mockery and tomorrow’s legend!
But in order to make it his far, you must fail a lot in order to succeed. Here are 5 reasons why failure is very healthy for creative designers in particular.

Reason 1: Enjoy Creative Exploration

If you want to become a sought after designer someday, you must be authentic and your work must reflect who you are. In other words, you can’t get their by mimicking someone else blindly. Your work must your personal brand. In order to figure out who you are design wise, you will need to experiment for a while. Don’t rush your natural evolvement process. Screw up, make mistakes, learn, explore, enjoy!

Reason 2: Remember that Route to the Hall of Fame Starts From the Hall of Shame!

What if you came 10th place in a design competition of 10 contestants?! Does that mean you have failed? Hell no! You have won because you took the risk. You have won because you saw what the top winners did right to learn from them. You won because your aesthetically suicidal design is your ticket to amazing designs to come.

Reason 3: Listen to Your Inner Voice

Receiving criticism from others can be very tricky sometimes. Some people take whatever others throw at them for granted. They never question it! Their self-confidence is at the mercy of what others say or do! On the other end of the spectrum you will find the over-confident folks who believe that every crappy design they did is a masterpiece and would readily kill anyone who begs to differ!

Smart people, on the other hand, let their intuition guide them when they listen to other people’s criticism. If what they said resonates with you, then you probably received constructive criticism. The biggest sign of constructive criticism is that your critic offers you exact advises on how to work on your deficiencies but if s/he just pointed out your flaws in a demeaning way, then probably s/ he is not worth listening to. It would be a great loss to overlook a sincere advice and also much greater loss to buy into some crap of some criticism freaks. How could you tell who is who? Just follow your heart.

Reason 4: Ready, Set, Grow!

Are your ready to leave the audience seat and get in the game? Are you going to roll up your sleeves and start filling huge stockpiles of files with drawings, sketches, designs that you wouldn’t dare to show to anyone? Are you willing to embrace what you see as pure ugly work that feels like a mismatch made in hell and love it only because it is yours? And here comes the most important question of all: do you realize that with every crappy design is your milestone to a great design? If you get that, you will make it big time.

Reason 5: Break the Rules and enjoy it!

The word “create” means making up something from scratch or bringing an idea or a product that never existed before into existence. I for instance, launched a marketplace where marketeers can buy unique content. When few centuries someone came and said we can fly, he was a laughing stock because he broke the rules. Break the rules and enjoy doing it since that’s the only way you can embrace the creativity within.

“No Pain no gain” and when you fail miserably before you succeed, you will experience the real taste of success. There is no sense of accomplishment when things come to you handy without any effort on your behalf. Now I will leave with the most important lessons you can take away from this article:

Without believing in yourself and your unique talents and gifts, success will be impossible
Creativity is controversial. Do NOT expect the whole world to give you a standing ovation
Be authentic and true to who you are

One thing that most designers and creative minds have in common is the ability to feel inspired by looking at other people’s work. Many different types of design even interact with each other and use similar styles. This time we’re going to have a look at something that for many is a great inspirational source: Typography. Typography is a wide term that includes everything from the layout of old printed books, signs, ads and even digital art.

Where typography in the past was something used to front content it has today grown into an art-form of it’s own. Sometimes typography has a clear message and many times designers use strong words or quotes accompanied by a certain type of letters. Other times the word(s) included are more or less random and the strong use of different effects is the meaning behind it.
