Internet Marketing through Link Building – Does It Really Work?

While there are numerous Internet marketing techniques out there to try, link building is almost always mentioned in the top five.

Why? Because it works! Link building is the process of getting other websites to link to yours. This can be achieved several ways, but ultimately its purpose is to show the search engine crawlers that your site is worth linking to.

If a few high quality sites deem your site worthy for a back link, this merits a second glance from search engine robots. It means your site may offer valuable information that others want their site users to know about. And while there are thousands (if not millions) of directories that were designed just for this purpose – and full of spammers by the way – there are still many effective ways to build quality back links to your site. Keep in mind that more quality back links equal more recognition from search engines!

Article Marketing for Links

A popular method for building back links is to write articles (or have them written) about your site’s subject and then link to pages at your website in the article resource box. Articles can be submitted to free article sites and any site that relates to your business (except competitors). You can also include text links within the article that link back to your site.

*Hint: Don’t link all articles to the homepage. Link to various pages within your site, according to the article topic. If it’s a how-to article about planting roses in your garden, then link to your site page that talks about or sells roses.

Link Building with Blogs

Blogs also provide a terrific source for link marketing. They are interactive and provide a lighthearted place where people can chat, get tips and learn more about Internet marketing or any subject. Create your own blog and post with others that are related to your site, including a link on each post. Avoid trying to “sell” in blog posts. Don’t overdo it. Just offer free advice or personal comments, and let your link do the rest!

*Hint: Look for high ranking blogs that are related to your site’s theme for the best results.

Forum Back Links

Similar to blogging, check out forums on related subjects and offer free advice or resources as folks ask questions. Include a link to your site in your profile and/or at the bottom of each post, but don’t be a self-promoter.

*Hint: Create a profile with your photo so users will recognize you.

Directories

Search for directories that belong to legitimate sites…not spam-friendly directories. Some are monitored by a real person so that only quality, related sites are added. Check websites that offer a directory as a resource page, but not for merely link-building purposes. Submit your site to authoritative directories as well (with .edu or .gov domains).

*Hint: Be sure to use popular keywords in the text link for directory links or for any back link. This can boost your SEO efforts in a hurry!

Social Bookmarking

Include your site on all the major social bookmarking sites to gain quality links. You might gain new visitors from these sites as folks start to recommend your site to others and bookmark it.

*Hint: Don’t forget to include all the social bookmark links on your site’s main pages. It gives your pages a professional look and feel, and Web users today seem to love the social scene.

Link Exchanges

Link exchanges should only be with quality sites that are related to yours. Don’t give out links freely. Examine the site and make sure it is a reputable business with valid links. Some spammers will email you for a link exchange on a high-ranking site, and then never link back or link to your site on a different site than initially promised.

*Hint: Double check your exchange link a month or two later to make sure it’s still where it should be on the other person’s website. If your link has “miraculously disappeared” from their site, then quickly remove their link from your site to pay back the favor!
