Showcase Of Apple iPad Ready Websites

This is the second article we are writing about iPad. Last article was pretty funny with iPad pictures. iPad’s Safari browser deliver a desktop web experience. With 9.7″ screen, Safari on iPad use the same WebKit layout engine as Safari on Windows and Mac OS X. Also iPad supports the latest web trends including HTML5 CSS3. In this post we will showcase some great websites which take advantage of these new web standards that works great on iPad.
CNN
When you browse CNN.com on iPad, the site automatically display HTML5 video player, providing you with the best possible viewing experience.
Reuters
View most of the Reuters website content through HTML5 video player on iPad.
New York Times
Along with custom iPad application, the NY times is now showing videos with HTML5.
CBS
Watch clips from your favorite shows on the HTML5-enabled, iPad-friendly CBS.com.
ESPN
If you are browsing ESPN.com on iPad, you will experience they are using HTML5 to play audio and video. Live scoring and navigation have also been optimized for the iPad Multi-Touch display.
Flickr
Flickr is now displaying videos via an iPad-compatible HTML5 player.
MLB
At MLB.com, you will experience browsing experience optimized for iPad, providing fans with live baseball action at their fingertips.
National Geographic
At nationalgeographic.com, you can watch National Geographic videos on your iPad using the new HTML5 video player.
Netflix
With more than 15 million members, Netflix, Inc. is the world’s largest subscription service streaming movies and TV episodes over the Internet and sending DVDs by mail. The iPad version of netflix.com makes it easy to browse movies and add them to your queue.
NHL
NHL.com is the official web site of the National Hockey League. If you are browse the website through iPad, it displays optimized content with recently published videos.
Nike
Nike.com got new website specifically designed for iPad. Nike has established a strong Brand Portfolio with several wholly-owned subsidiaries.
NPR
NPR delivers breaking national and world news. NPR.org have an HTML5 audio player and embedded HTML5 video for iPad.
People
People.com is the #1 site for breaking news, celebrity pictures and star style. Videos play in HTML5 video player in iPad-viewable format.
Sports Illustrated
Videos over SI.com are displayed in HTML5 video player when viewed in iPad. Sports Illustrated Magazine is also available for iPad.
Spin
SPIN.com is optimized for iPad, providing music fans with the latest live performances and backstage coverage of their favorite bands.
Ted
TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. The website, TED.com, is all optimized for iPad.
Time
Time.com is a news site, very much optimized for iPad and all published videos play in HTML5 player.
Vimeo
Vimeo is a respectful community of creative people who are passionate about sharing the videos they make. Vimeo.com features HTML5 player that displays videos on iPad.
Virgin Amercia
A brand new airline dedicated to making flying good again. The website looks and works perfect in iPad.
The White House
The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States. WhiteHouse.gov is entirely standards based website that displays video using the HTML5 video player.
Gmail
Gmail is a free, advertising-supported webmail, POP3, and IMAP service provided by Google. Gmail is very much optimized for iPad with HTML5.
MySpace
MySpace is a social networking website. On iPad, the site automatically displays an HTML5 video player.
Pandora
Pandora radio is the personalized internet radio service that helps you find new music based on your old and current favorites. It is only 1-page that serves to advertise their iPad app, Pandora is also delivering alternate content to iPad visitors. iPad users are redirected to http://www.pandora.com/on-the-ipad/
Mygazines
Rather creating their own app, Mygazines opted to offer their publications up for web-based viewing on the iPad.
EA Sports
Electronic Arts, Inc. (EA) is an international developer, marketer, publisher and distributor of video games. All game trailers, news and interviews are displayed in HTML5 video player on iPad.
CW
The CW Network was formed as a joint venture between Warner Bros. Entertainment and CBS Corporation. While browsing CWTv.com, you will feel all videos are optimized for iPad to play in HTML5 player.
Tyra
The Tyra Show gives young women the ‘girlfriend’ they want to hang out with, and the role model they need. While browsing Tyra.com on iPad, you will see iPad-compatible H.264 video and HTML5 navigation elements.
Rouxbe
Rouxbe is the world’s leading online cooking school for home cooks. All videos are standards-based HD video perfect for kitchen viewing on iPad.
The Onion
The Onion is an American news satire organization. At theonion.com, the iPad users are provided standards-based browsing experience .
Extra
Extra has the hottest celebrity and entertainment news, photos, gossip, scandals, videos, games, music, movies, television and star sightings. On iPad while browing Extra, you will watch H.264 video and HTML5 navigation elements.

Whoa what a huge collection!
I wonder how you managed to take a clear screenshot of every website in iPad? Did you take them yourself?
I am not a fan of iPad, bit these images with the websites look pretty appealing.

In my opinion, NONE of these companies took full advantage of HTML5, instead altering their main website to fit. The right thing to do is to build a solution thats tailored to fit the iPad.

Completely agree with Nick, i dont get the point of redesigning websites to fit an ipad if all that is achieved is a layout change.

Nice collection.
I would like to mention Jaipho javascript image gallery as a usable tool for making sites iPad ready. It was originally made only to support iPhone but since last version http://www.jaipho.com/content/ipad-version-released it fully supports iPad too.

I used an iPad to visit CNN, NYTimes and TED. No video plays, not sure if this is a recent change that happened…were you able to visit the sites and play videos in Safari of iPad. or are you talking about downloadable iPad apps (which is not the same thing)

I fail to see the point of this post, if the sum total of HTML on iPad is the ability to show video then am afraid that is poor. I completely agree with Nick, making a design iPad ready has to be more than making the website fitting into the screen and being able to show video, almost any portable device can do that, well except Apple devices.
